Hours of operation are M-F Am-Pm and Sat Am-Pm 40/week
must be able to work some weekends
shift differential pay after Pm$1/hr extra M-F and $9 extra Saturdays

SUMMARY: Responsible for assisting the Dentist(s) and Dental Hygienist(s) in direct patient care of pediatric and adult patients. Responsible for sterilization, preparation and inventory control of dental instruments and supplies. Responsible for creating a caring and receptive patient environment and an effective, efficient, and productive patient visit. Requires attention to detail, flexibility, cultural sensitivity in a diverse environment, and the ability to work as a valued team member in a fast-paced clinical setting.

EXPECTATIONS:
* Assist in the delivery of caring, quality and culturally competent dental services to children and adults
* Demonstrate high degree of knowledge and competency in dental assisting
* Ensure accuracy, efficiency, and appropriate confidentiality with patient charting and related record keeping and administrative functions as assigned

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Provide chair-side assistance to Dentist(s) and Dental Hygienist(s) during procedures, including exams, sealants, cleanings, restorations, oral surgery, dentures, and some root canals and crowns
* Prepare clinical area for daily activities, including start of day and closing
* Prepares, sterilizes, organizes, and sets up dental equipment, ensures that all dental instruments are properly cleaned, dated, and processed according to clinical standards
* Monitors and maintains dental equipment, such as compressors, educator systems, radiography equipment, sterilizers, and light curing units, in accordance with manufacturers guidelines
* Prepare patient for provider, including seating the patient, taking vitals and reviewing patient medical and dental history
* Make entries on the patient chart as directed by provider
* Provide patient education, including proper oral home care and assisting the dentist in explaining dental procedures and post-operative instructions
* Properly take digital radio graphs in accordance with provider orders and state dental regulations
* Assist in the monitoring and maintenance of radiation safety procedures and protocols
* Ensure that dental supply inventory is maintained
* Apply anti-cariogenic agents, including fluoride varnish
* Apply topical anesthetic agents
* Apply and adjust dental sealants
* Take alginate impressions for study casts, mouth guards and custom trays
* Pour and prepare models from impressions
* Re-cement and adjust intact temporary restorations intraorally
* Place temporary restorations to provide palliative treatment
* Place and remove gingival retraction materials
* Remove temporary restorations with hand instruments
* Place and remove dental dams
* Remove sutures
* Cement and remove temporary crowns
* Insert and/or perform minor adjustment of night mouth guards, athletic mouth guards, and custom fluoride trays
* Pour lab models, and Fabricate night mouth guards, athletic mouth guards, and custom fluoride trays
* Select and adapt stainless steel crowns or other preformed crown for insertion by dentist
* Polish teeth, after Dentist or Dental Hygienist has determined that teeth are free of calculus, with slow speed hand piece
* Preliminary fit crowns to check contacts, adjust occlusion on crowns inside the mouth
* Place temporary soft liners in a removable prosthesis
* Fabricate provisional restorations intraorally
* Reviews chart with dentist to establish treatment plan
* Prepares operatory for planned treatment
* Performs miscellaneous clerical duties as needed such as confirming and scheduling patients
* Maintain a sterile field and operate an autoclave
* Provide translation services, as needed
* Take intra-oral photographs
* Teach and train patients and staff on oral health promotion and disease prevention
* Report any concerns about equipment malfunctions, patient safety and/or clinical operations immediately to Dental Director
* Communicate effectively, clearly, concisely with others, both verbally and in writing
* Utilize computers for data entry and information retrieval with proficiency
* Actively participate in regular peer review
* Actively supports, promotes and works to fulfill the mission and values of Lowell CHC
* Meets mandatory education, safety, and health requirements
* Participate in on-site and off-site continuing educational programs and in-service training, to maintain license and to meet the needs of the patients
* Assist Office Manager with administrative/clerical front desk responsibilities as necessary
* Attend all departmental and center wide meetings ex: full-staff, etc.
* Other duties as needed or required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current and valid license to practice dentistry in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.
  • At least one year of general dentistry experience.
  • Spanish, Portuguese, Khmer, Swahili language skills a plus.
  • History of good attendance and positive work attitude is essential. Hours may include occasional evenings and weekends.
